NEW STRAITS TIMES1,250 take part in Century Ride 29 Aug 2011

IPOH: Some 1,250 cyclists participated in the fifth Century Ride Malaysia here recently,
Organised by Kelab Road Runners (KRI), the event was flagged off at Dataran Ipoh by Perak sports exco member Datuk Zainol Padzi Paharuddin who represented Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir .

Also present were State Sport and Youth Council assistant director Hassan Noorhadi Awang, Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board director Norhamshida Abdul Rahman, organising chairman Ernest Balasingam and organising deputy chairperson Alice Chim

The cyclists rode 160km from Ipoh to Simpang Pulai, Batu Gajah, Kampung Bali (Parit), Manong and back to Dataran Ipoh.
There were also participants from Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Japan, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Australia. About 50 cycling clubs took part in the event.

The winner of the men's category was Adrian Chuah who finished the race in 4 hours, 7 minutes and 1 seconds.

Coming out tops in the women's category was Christina Liew who clocked 4 hours 10 minute and 59 seconds. Both received trophies and sponsored gifts.

The other categories contested were Men's Open (18 years and above); Men's Veteran (40-49 years), Men's Senior Veteran (50 years and above) and Women Open (18 years and above).

KRI president Chong Him Shoong said the goal of the annual event was to promote Perak to the world through cycling, as well as bringing cyclists from various countries together.

"The largest contingent from other countries was Singapore whereby 400 cyclists signed up for the ride," he said.

Zainol said the council recognised cycling as a healthy hobby and they hope to encourage talented cyclists in the state to excel in the sport
